Capturing the Spirit of the American West

Follow Us on
Frankie Dougal, 93
The asphalt ends at Jordan Valley, Ore., the only town in the vicinity. Ranches start spreading farther a part as sagebrush and red-brown cliffs emerge, and deep canyons cut the vast high country desert that is part of the Great Basin. Somewhere between rocks and bunchgrass, Oregon turns into Idaho. Juniper trees appear a few at a time, becoming denser until you come to the Dougal ranch. Parts of the ranch have been in the Dougal family for 100 years, says Frankie.
"Not much has changed since 1910 when mom and dad built the 5-Bar ranch, except that I did quit riding horses last year when I was 91, due to a bad hip," says Frankie. "I used to be a buckaroo, now I'm a bit more of a cookaroo. Love it, all the ranch life, love it all, but it's a hard way to make a living; there's always work to do."

The Idaho Buckaroo Project
Mission: Promote Understanding and Preserve the Buckaroo Way of Life
HOW this will be accomplished:
1. Continue to document through photographs and interviews/stories the men, women and children—families—of the Idaho Buckaroo and Cowboy culture. These are people who make their daily living with horses and cattle. This will promote understanding of these families and help preserve this way of life through historical documentation.
2. Education — Schools, libraries and other educational institutions — I will be taking the Idaho Buckaroo Project into schools, libraries and other public meeting places as an educational experience and exposure for the Project.
3. Provide scholarships and apprenticeships to people within this culture. This will include learning how to make bits and spurs, saddles, rawhide braiding, leather work which can be used to accentuate their income, or become the sole source of income should they become injured. It will also include computer, and other beneficial skills. This program would compliment other state programs.
